Greenpeace on the attack slams Nokia, Nintendo in electronics guide

San Francisco - Nokia fell from first place to ninth and Nintendo placed last in the latest guide to green electronics from Greenpeace.

Nokia's ranking dropped mainly because Greenpeace says the company fails to support its stated recycling program. A Greenpeace video shows a mobile user entering a shop in Argentina that Nokia referred the user to in order to recycle an old phone. The shopkeeper says she doesn't take back used phones and doesn't know where to refer the person to do so.

Samsung shipping new phones with Broadcom chips

SAN FRANCISCO (Reuters) - Wireless chipmaker Broadcom Corp said on Sunday that number-two cell phone maker Samsung Electronics Co Ltd was shipping next-generation handsets that use its chips to cellular operators.

The 3G phones, which can surf the Web and download data from the Internet faster than previous generations of phones, are on their way to operators in Europe, Asia, Africa, Australia and elsewhere, Broadcom said.

Number-one cell phone maker Nokia has said it would buy phone chips from STMicroelectronics, Broadcom and Infineon, potentially decreasing the clout of market leaders Qualcomm Inc and Texas Instruments Inc, Nokia's long-time supplier.

HELSINKI (Reuters) - Nokia (NOK1V.HE), the world's top cell phone maker, said it will co-brand a set of Renault (RENA.PA) Twingo cars which will go on sale later this month, packed with Nokia's navigation system and handsfree equipment.

"Navigation is a new and fast growing industry and we are also looking for new ways to operate there. Co-operation of Nokia and a car industry is a natural step," Nokia's spokeswoman Eija-Riitta Huovinen said on Wednesday.
